For some reason, California breweries didn’t do all that well in the recent U.S. Open Beer Championships, a big beer judging competition in Atlanta last weekend – no California brewery placed in the top 10 and there were only a scattering of individual winners from around here.
But that having been said, a couple of Beer Country locals did show up on the winners list:
- Lagunitas “A Little Sumpin’ Sumpin'” ale took silver in the American Specialty Wheat category.
- Anderson Valley “Gatlin Damnosus” took gold in the Wood Aged Sour category.
- Moylans “Our Dark Secret” took gold in the Out of Bounds Pale Ale category.
Overall, the top brewery was Capital Brewing in Middleton, Wisconsin, followed by our new friends from Atlanta, Sweetwater Brewing, which is in a tiff with Lagunitas over the use of the marijuana slang term “420” on labels.
Here’s a complete winner’s list.
